New paper on assays in liquid plugs

New paper on assays in liquid plugs

Tiny liquid plugs are perfect containers for bioanalytical assays. We have used such nanoliter compartments to monitor biomolecular reactions in a time-resolved way. The results were recently published in Analytical Chemistry.

New project on the reduction of fibroblast adhesion

Scar formation is the most prominent complication after Glaucoma treatment via Trabeculectomy. It is usually triggered by tenon fibroblasts which quickly adhere to the opening and trigger unwanted wound healing. In an interdisciplinary project with the Ophthalmic Clinic Freiburg we plan to reduce scar formation by reducing fibroblast adhesion at the surgical site. The project has now gained funding by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Surface-attached hydrogels for microarray based immunoassays

Surface-attached hydrogels for microarray based immunoassays

A promising pathway to improve on the sensitivity of protein microarrays is to immobilize the capture antibodies in a three dimensional hydrogel matrix. We describe a simple method based on printing of an aqueous protein solution containing a photosensitive polymer and the capture antibody onto a plastic chip surface.

Unusual tribochemical polishing

Unusual tribochemical polishing

A DFG-funded project with collaborators from the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM) and the Freiburger Materialforschungszentrum (FMF) has revealed a rather special case of tribochemical polishing which leads to a ultralow coefficient of friction between two steel surfaces.
